AGV Buyer's Guide: How to Choose an Automated Guided Vehicle

Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) automate line-side delivery and warehouse transport. With navigation options ranging from magnetic tape to laser SLAM, choosing the right configuration determines deployment success.

1. Navigation Technology

Magnetic tape / QR codes: lowest cost, but infrastructure changes when routes change. Laser reflectors: accurate and stable, higher installation cost. SLAM natural navigation: no infrastructure, flexible routes, higher unit price. Match navigation to how often your layout changes.

2. Payload and Vehicle Type

Choose from underride (tugger), forklift-type, or lift-deck AGVs based on your load type. Confirm payload, load dimensions and center of gravity with the supplier.

3. Docking and Integration

Conveyor docking, roller tables and lift platforms need alignment accuracy of ±5-10 mm. Confirm MES/WMS integration interfaces (REST API, Modbus, OPC-UA) before purchase.

4. Safety Systems

LiDAR safety scanners, visual cameras, ultrasonic sensors and emergency stops should meet ISO 3691-4 requirements. Multi-level safety is non-negotiable in shared aisles.

5. Fleet Management

Traffic control, task dispatch, battery charging management and analytics come from the fleet software. Ask for a demo with your actual warehouse layout.
