Sep 2, 2026 10:05am robotaxis Tesla Sensors Applications Optical / Imaging --> Tesla is holding a Cybercab launch event Thursday in Austin, Texas, widely expected to be a formal debut of its purpose-built robotaxi.
It will not be just another robotaxi launch, because Tesla is attempting to prove that a driverless, steering-wheel-free commercial vehicle can operate at scale using vision-first sensing.
sep2 Production-ready "gleaming gold" Cybercab videos and photos started appearing on X posts on Wednesday.
Vision-first is an industry expression for how imaging sensor systems can lead the various sensor inputs for navigation and safety, sometimes with other sensing supplanting the vision sensors, even radar and infrared.
Tesla has long held that lidar is not needed for its vehicles, a different position than Waymo takes with its lidar-equipped vehicles running in 14 US cities by now, recently adding paid driverless rides in Denver, San Diego and Tampa, Florida. Waymo boasts of using 13 different cameras in its 6 th generation vehicles, along with six radars, four lidars and an array of microphones.
Amazon’s Zoox recently said it is planning to start testing robotaxis this month in Houston and San Diego with human supervisors on board.
What’s not clear about Tesla’s “Exclusive Access Cybercab“ event is whether the vehicle will be immediately available to public after the event and the size of the initial Cybercab fleet. Also, will Tesla announce expansion to other cities and is it working under new regulatory approvals?
Analyst Patrick Moorhead at Moor Insights & Strategy reported on X that he has seen Model Y Teslas running autonomously in Austin that could be tied to the Cybercab event. The vehicles he spied where black, but were pictured in gold on other social posts.
for sept 2 story The Cybercab is widely expected to be more than a Model 7 Tesla, and would be the first Tesla vehicle designed from the ground up with no steering wheel or pedals.
So what will Tesla say about vision-first and no lidar, if that proves to be so? Whether lidar is involved might not be as important as seeing the new vehicle run without a driver and then monitoring how quickly the vehicles can be deployed broadly.
Back to the lidar question. IDC analyst Phil Solis remarked on X that a Cybercab with no lidar relying on vision-first "can work...as long as lighting conditions are just right. "
He continued that sometimes the sun is at a low angle and faces a camera head on, or there is a rain storm or snowstorm with snow covering everything on a car. Or there can be sunlight reflected off of glass or snow.
"Not having lidar can be dangerous, as we have seen in the past," Solis added. "Regulation can help protect people-- for example, banning autonomous vehicles from running during sunrise, sunset or bad weather or just requiring lidar. Perhaps there could be a combination of visible light and infrared cameras that could work well in difficult conditions. Maybe Tesla will prove what we know to be wrong. Not including lidar is a cost decision, but it can be a costly one.
"Commercial robots and even relatively low-cost consumer robots have lidar because it works so well to map the environment in real time."
