Efinix’s Sapphire RV64 adds 64-bit RISC-V processing, larger memory support and Linux capabilities to its FPGA-based SoC portfolio.
Efinix Inc. has introduced the Sapphire RV64 SoC, a 64-bit RISC-V processor core for embedded applications requiring more memory, cache and I/O capacity than 32-bit processor architectures can provide.
The new core extends Efinix’s Sapphire SoC family, which includes 32-bit RISC-V processors, while retaining a configurable architecture for FPGA-based designs. The company targets applications including embedded Linux and edge AI that require higher processing capability without moving away from FPGA-based implementation.
Sapphire RV64 implements the RISC-V64IM ISA with a seven-stage pipeline. Optional extensions include A, F, D, C, Zba, Zbb, Zbs and Zicbom. The processor supports 4 KB to 512 KB of on-chip RAM, along with a multi-way L1 instruction and data cache. Optional features include an L2 cache, branch predictor, and hardware and software prefetchers.

“Sapphire RV64 was designed so customers already using our 32-bit Sapphire SoCs can scale up without re-architecting their systems,” said Tony Ngai, co-founder, Co-President, and CTO of Efinix. “It carries forward the same configurable, FPGA-native approach, but now with larger addressable memory, caching, and debug capability that 64-bit embedded Linux and AI workloads demand.”
An optional SV39 memory management unit provides support for Linux-based systems. The memory controller supports DDR3, HyperRAM and LPDDR4x interfaces at data rates of up to 3,200 Mbps.
The processor also includes debug features and FPGA co-debug capabilities. As with Efinix’s RV32 architecture, custom instructions can be used to add FPGA acceleration within a software-defined development flow.
“Customers building increasingly sophisticated embedded and edge AI systems have been asking us for a path to 64-bit processing without giving up the low power and configurability that made Sapphire successful,” said Mark Oliver, Vice President of Marketing at Efinix. “Sapphire RV64 gives designers that headroom, with larger memory spaces, deeper caches, and more capable debug, while staying true to the user-configurable philosophy of the entire Sapphire SoC suite.”
Sapphire RV64 is available across Efinix’s Titanium and Topaz FPGA families, as well as Trion devices from the T20 and above.
